A Journey of Healing, Hope, and Transformation
Through the incredible generosity of both St. Paul’s and St. Johannes Lutheran Churches, we’ve been able to make a profound impact on people in need across Charleston and the surrounding areas. Together, with the support of Next Steps of South Carolina and the Navigation Center of Charleston, we’ve provided life-changing assistance for families and individuals facing overwhelming challenges. From paying overdue utility bills to offering housing resources, your faithful giving has helped transform lives. These are not just numbers or statistics—they are real people, the very faces of Jesus among us. Your support has helped mothers, grandmothers, fathers, and children find stability, help, and hope during moments when all seemed lost. What a blessing it is to be part of this work together, as one community of faith striving to show Christ’s love to our neighbors. Below are some of the incredible stories of the people whose lives your generosity has touched.
Opal – A Stylist Fighting to Rebuild
After breaking her arm in a car accident, Opal, a hairstylist and mother to an 8-year-old daughter, lost half her clients. Unable to work, she fell behind on her electric bill. Even after making a partial payment, she needed additional help. Together, our churches and Next Steps ensured her lights stayed on, giving her the breathing room to plan her financial recovery.
Brandon – A Fresh Start with Support
Brandon, a young man with developmental challenges, lives independently on disability payments that fall short of his needs. With encouragement from his mother, Brandon reached out for help with his rent. St. Paul’s, St. Johannes, and Next Steps contributed the support he needed, with the understanding that he would apply to vocational rehabilitation and seek employment. Brandon’s determination, along with continued guidance, has put him on a better path toward independence.
Lou – A Mother’s Fight for Stability
Lou, a mother of five, faced extraordinary challenges. Her youngest child was recovering from surgery, leaving Lou unable to work while she searched for affordable daycare options on Johns Island. Facing an overdue electric bill, our churches, Next Steps, and the Navigation Center paid off her bill and are now helping her relocate to North Charleston, where job opportunities and childcare are more accessible.
Jennifer M. – Building a Brighter Future
Jennifer, her husband James, and their four children have shown remarkable resilience. James is awaiting a work visa, while Jennifer juggles a job and caring for their three children with asthma and one recovering from surgery. When they fell behind on their electric bill despite making a significant payment, our churches and Next Steps joined forces to keep their electricity on, allowing this faithful family to stay on track.
Octavia – A Heart That Gives Beyond Measure
Octavia, a loving grandmother caring for her grandchildren, stretches her budget daily to provide for them—even paying for multiple phone bills. Unfortunately, this left her unable to pay her large winter electric bill. With financial help from St. Paul’s, St. Johannes, and Next Steps, Octavia’s electricity stayed connected. She’s now receiving financial counseling to reshape her budget and ensure she can care for herself as well as her family.
Joe – Quiet Strength Amid Adversity
Joe, a 62-year-old construction worker, was left disabled after a bullet accident years ago. He moved to Charleston looking for stability but struggled to meet his basic needs on a limited income. Through your generosity, Joe’s rent at Star Gospel Mission was covered for another month, giving him time to work with the Navigation Center toward meaningful employment.
Warren – Perseverance Through Temporary Setbacks
After being laid off from his job, Warren, a hardworking and hopeful man, needed help covering just one week’s rent until his new job started. Showing his strong will to move forward, Warren only asked for what he needed. St. Johannes, St. Paul’s, and Next Steps quickly stepped in to ensure he had stable housing, and his uplifting determination inspired everyone involved.
Doreen – Strength in the Face of Loss and Illness
Doreen faced immense challenges after losing her daughter and raising her grandchild as her own. Now, at 65, while battling cancer, she fell behind on her water bill. With help from our churches and Next Steps, she was able to pay the balance. Doreen’s story reminds us of the unshakable love and resilience that sustain our faith community.
Martha – A Safe Haven for Her Daughters
Martha, a single mom, was living in her car with her daughters while saving for a rental deposit. With help from the Navigation Center, St. Paul’s, St. Johannes, and Next Steps, Martha and her daughters now have a warm, safe home and a fresh start.
Liz – Joy Amidst the Storms
Liz, a kidney transplant survivor juggling health challenges and financial difficulties, inspires everyone she meets. Facing electricity disconnection, Liz found support from both congregations and Next Steps, who paid off her past-due balance. Now, Liz can continue her health journey without the looming stress of losing power.
Ms. Smith – Building Stability for Her Family
Ms. Smith, a mother of three, recently transitioned from homelessness into housing. Through a partnership with her local school district and support from our churches and Next Steps, Ms. Smith was able to cover her down payment and give her children a fresh start in a stable home.
Celebrating Transformation Together
These stories are a testament not only to the strength of the human spirit but also to what happens when we come together as God's people. Through the support of St. Paul’s, St. Johannes, and our trusted partners, lives are being transformed daily. Thank you for your faithful generosity—it’s because of you that we can be the hands and feet of Jesus, offering hope, help, and healing to our neighbors in need. Let’s continue working together to reflect God’s love and grace in this community. It’s a joy and privilege to serve alongside you!
